Landmark Event in Chinese Music | InternationalSheng & Reeds Festival 2026 — "CONTENDERS FOR THE REEDS, NEW MOVEMENT IN SHENG" Competition for Professional Sheng Performance and Call for New Works with the 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week
International Sheng & Reeds Festival 2026
"Contenders for the Reeds, New movement in Sheng"
Competition for Professional Sheng Performance and Call for New Works
cum The 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week

The Sheng, a living fossil of China's 3,000-year ritual and musical civilization, embodies traditional philosophical ideas such as unceasing vitality and ultimate harmony. As early as the Western Jin dynasty, Pan Yue wrote:
"Only the reed can refine the clarity of all sounds; only the sheng can gather the purity of many tones."
Since its introduction to Europe in the 18th century, the Sheng has also played a positive role in the development of free-reed instruments worldwide.
The 2026 International Sheng & Reeds Festival is initiated and conceptualized by Yan Huichang (Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for Life of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra). In addition to the large-scale opening event in March — "Endless Sheng, Thousand Reeds in Harmony" Sheng & Reeds Marathon, and the September opening concert of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra's 50th season — "Thousand Reeds, One Universe", Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will also jointly present, with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the event "Contenders for the Reeds, New Movement in Sheng" — Competition for Professional Sheng Performance and Call for New Works together with the 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week.
Coinciding with the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Folk Music at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, this event benchmarks competitions at the international level, actively promotes the discovery of outstanding Sheng performers, and enhances vitality in Sheng composition. Concurrent Master concerts and Sheng art exhibitions will further showcase the boundless appeal of contemporary Sheng artistry.
